« CHAPTER 9 »
Nathan
I arrived in New York the next morning which was a Monday, and immediately rushed over to Nora’s’.
Carlie opened the door for me and looked so relieved when she saw me.
“Oh thank God you’re here,” she said. “I have to get back to the office but I can’t leave her alone. Please stay for a bit, I’ll be back soon.”
“Of course,” I told her and dropped my hand luggage in the lobby. I strode over to her bedroom door and knocked on the door. When after a few seconds, there was still no response, I just pulled the handle open and walked in.
The room was dark because the drapes were pulled together, but the light from the television allowed me to see her a bit more clearly. She was lying on her back with her hair splayed all around her and still in the dress from her engagement party. My chest tightened with emotion as I strode over and drew up the chair that was by the corner, so that I could sit close to her.
I watched her for a few minutes as she slept. Sometimes she would whimper in pain, and then her eyebrows would pull together in a small frown. My heart went out to her and more than anything I wished at that moment that I could kiss her. So much emotion concerning her had welled up inside of me that it felt like if I didn’t get a release somehow, that I would explode. I leaned a bit closer to her but just then she moved slightly and that immediately drew me back. I didn’t want to wake her. However, a few seconds later, her eyes slowly slid open.
“Hi,” I said, but she didn’t respond. She just watched me, her eyes almost drained of all the light in them.
“How are you feeling?” I asked.
“Better,” she replied.
“Did I wake you? I’m sorry.”
“You didn’t. I can’t sleep too deeply now because of the pain.”
“What about your meds?”
“It’s because of them that I’m not screaming. The ache seems to have worsened a bit from last night though.”
“What about the previous night?”
Her eyes closed briefly. “Not as bad. Nothing could be that bad.”
“Can I hold your hand?” I asked. I knew I was being too forward, after all we’d only just reached a place where we were almost friendly with each other but I needed this to keep me sane. Not touching her was driving me out of my mind.
She hesitated for a few seconds before she finally replied. “I don’t know. It might hurt. Everywhere hurts.”
“Let’s try,” I half-pleaded and moved closer so that I was sitting on the edge of the chair.
I used a finger to gently poke the top of her hand, and then a bit harder when she didn’t react. Then gently, I rested my hand on top of hers. I didn’t know if she realized it but in that single touch, was an apology. An apology and a promise. An apology for
